Point processes are one of the main building blocks in the description of many spatial random systems. This autumn school aims to foster exchange between young and established researchers and to explore modern research on point processes and their dynamics.

Die Mathematik-Exzellenzcluster aus Berlin, Bonn und Münster laden alle Interessierten zu einem vielfältigen Programm ein – alles online via Zoom: nachmittags Workshops für Kinder und Jugendliche, abends Mathe-Quiz, Talkrunde zum Thema Mathematik und Künstliche Intelligenz und Vorträge von Forschenden.

Sylvy Anscombe, Maîtresse de Conférences at the Université Paris Cité, is a Young Research Fellow at our Cluster. She works at the interface of mathematical logic and algebra. During her stay until the end of the year, she will continue her collaboration with Franziska Jahnke.


 

On 17 October, Prof. Dr. Lisa Sauermann (University of Bonn) gave the "John von Neumann Lecture" at Mathematics Münster. Many researchers joint her inspiring talk "On three-term progression-free sets and related questions in additive combinatorics" and the reception in the Common Room of the Cluster of Excellence afterwards.

We cordially invite you to the 17th John von Neumann Lecture. On 17 October 2024 at 4:15 pm, the renowned mathematician Lisa Sauermann (University of Bonn) will give a stimulating talk "On Three-Term Progression-Free Sets and Related Questions in Additive Combinatorics".

Due to a large number of common mathematical interests in very diverse fields of mathematics, we decided to introduce a themed meeting bringing together researchers from the two institutions in related areas. The main objective is to get an idea about research interests and projects in each others' department (specifically at the PhD and postdoc level) and to provide a forum for future collaborations. The first theme is in "PDE", with an emphasis on the equations of fluid dynamics and kinetic theory.

Get an insight into the research of four new postdoctoral researchers of Mathematics Münster. In short scientific presentations Björn Gebhard, Julian Kranz, Devarshi Mukherjee and Pavlos Zoubouloglou will introduce their topics. The talks take place within the Colloquium Wilhelm Killing on 10 October 2024 at 2:15 pm in lecture hall M4.

We welcome Prof. Dr. Mirna Džamonja (Associate Researcher at IHPST (Université Panthéon-Sorbonne) and IRIF (Université Paris Cité)) as a Münster Research Fellow. Mirna Džamonja is a logician who mostly works in set theory, specialising in combinatorial set theory. During her stay at our Cluster in October 2024, she collaborates with Ralf Schindler on questions that connect inner model theory and combinatorial properties of ultrafilters and forcing.

We are delighted that Ralf Schindler, investigator of Mathematics Münster, and David Asperó (University of East Anglia) were awarded the Dov Gabbay Prize for Logic and Foundations 2024. The jury of the international research prize rewards their work in the foundations of set theory, and in particular their work connecting determinacy principles and so-called strong forcing axioms, both impinging on the nature of the continuum hypothesis.

In der neuesten Folge von unserem Podcast "On A Tangent" treffen wir auf Marjory Mwanza, Fellow des Young African Mathematicians Programms.Sie erzählt von ihrem Weg zur Gruppentheorie und wie sie in scheinbar einfachen Objekten faszinierende, tiefere Strukturen entdeckt.

We are happy about the stay of Prof. Dr. John R. Steel (UC Berkeley) as a Münster Research Fellow at the Cluster. He is one of the best set theorists worldwide. He keeps producing seminal results in descriptive set theory as well as in inner model theory. He has been a coorganiser of the "Münster meetings in inner model theory" for many years, putting a lot of energy into the promotion of young students. During his stay at our Cluster in September he continued his collaborations with Ralf Schindler.

The Buildings conference is an annual meeting and in 2024 we will celebrate its 30th edition. The conference will be held in honor of Linus Kramer's 60th birthday. Some of the main topics of the conference are: generalized polygons and related geometries.

The 6th Hausdorff Medal was awarded to Gabriel Goldberg (UC Berkeley). The ceremony took place at the European Set Theory Conference in Münster this week. With the medal, the committee honours the contribution Gabriel Goldberg has made to the field of set theory through his recent book "The Ultrapower Axiom".

This is the ninth edition of a series of biennial meetings. The 6th Hausdorff medalist(s) will be awarded at this meeting. As part of the ceremony, the medalist(s) is/are going to give their Hausdorff lecture.

Franziska Jahnke ist seit dem 1. September 2024 Professorin am Mathematischen Institut sowie am Institut für Logik und Grundlagenforschung. Sie forscht auf dem Gebiet Modelltheorie von Körpern. Ihre Arbeit verbindet mathematische Logik mit Anwendungen in der Algebra. Im Interview gibt sie Einblicke, was sie an der Mathematik besonders schön findet und welche Momente ihrer Karriere besonders wichtig waren.

The last several years have witnessed a significant intensification of the connections between probability (e.g., random walks and percolation) and ergodic theory, especially in treating questions that relate dynamical behaviour with analytic and geometric properties of groups such as amenability, property (T), and the Haagerup property. The meeting will serve to further strengthen these connections by promoting interaction between different communities of researchers.

We welcome Dr. Amandine Escalier as a new Young Research Fellow at our Cluster. She works in geometric group theory and measured dynamics at Université Lyon 1. She plans to work with Linus Kramer on graph products and right-angled Artin groups, and with David Kerr on orbit equivalence of measurable actions.

Um besonders begabten Schülerinnen und Schülern Einblicke in Studium und Forschung zu geben, ist die Universität Münster seit 2022 fester Kooperationspartner der NRW-Schülerakademie Mathematik und Informatik (SMIMS). Vergangene Woche besuchten die jungen Mathe-Talente unseren Fachbereich und unseren Exzellenzcluster, um Schnupper-Vorlesungen zu hören und sich individuell zu Studiengängen und Wissenschaftskarrieren beraten zu lassen.

Analytic torsion in its many facets is an important secondary spectral invariant studied in global analysis. The aim of this conference is to present a panorama of recent developments and interactions with other fields, that the study of analytic torsion has seen in the last years. On Thursday, 5 September, at 2 pm Jean-Michel Bismut (Institut de Mathématique d’Orsay) will give a bridging lecture: "A conversation with analytic torsion". The talk will take place in M3.

pyMOR School is an annual event for future and current pyMOR users and developers. The School will offer interactive introductory lectures on some of the most important MOR methods and how to use these methods with pyMOR.

Am 22. August endete die Abgabefrist für die Exzellenzcluster-Anträge bei der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft. In den vergangenen Wochen haben Mitglieder von Mathematics Münster den Fortsetzungsantrag für unser Exzellenzcluster erarbeitet. Die Entscheidung wird im Mai 2025 bekanntgegeben.

Non-linear stochastic PDEs are the object of the first "Postdoc Paper Talk". The new series of the Cluster of Excellence Mathematics Münster focuses on the research of our postdocs. In the first episode, Prof. Dr. Christopher Deninger interviews postdoc Dr. Markus Tempelmayr, whose Inventiones paper 'A diagram-free approach to the stochastic estimates in regularity structures' was recently published.

The Young Topologists Meeting (YTM) is an annual international conference aimed at early-career researchers in topology - both pure and applied - covering the whole breadth of the subject. It serves as a platform for graduates, PhD researchers and early postdocs to present their research, exchange ideas and build international connections.

Am 22. Juli 2024 fand im Schloss die feierliche Promotionsfeier des Fachbereichs Mathematik und Informatik statt. Eingeladen waren alle Promovierten, die im Sommersemester 2024 ihre Promotion erfolgreich abgeschlossen hatten. Zusätzlich wurden die YAM-Fellows mit ihren Zertifikaten ausgezeichnet.

We are delighted to announce that Professor Dr Arnulf Jentzen from Mathematik Münster, together with together with Jiequn Han and Weinan E, has received the prestigious Frontiers of Science Award for the outstanding publication at the International Congress of Basic Science (ICBS) in Beijing on 14 July 2024.
 

We welcome Dr. Simone Cecchini as a new Young Research Fellow at our Cluster. He is a tenure-track Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University and works at the interface of global analysis and topology. During his visit to Münster, he will continue his longstanding collaboration with Rudolf Zeidler on scalar curvature rigidity questions and exchange ideas with other scientists at Mathematics Münster.

There will be two talks at the CRC Colloquium on 11 July 2024: Prof. Dr. Rudolf Zeidler: Codimension one obstructions to positive scalar curvature and Prof. Dr. Johannes Ebert: Positive scalar curvature, cobordisms and diffeomorphism groups. The talks take place at 2:00 pm in lecture hall M4.

The first poster session of our Mathematics Münster Graduate School (MMGS) took place yesterday. The very well attended event started with short presentations at the "Posterblitz". Afterwards, the speakers gave detailed information about their research projects in the Cluster Lounge.

We are pleased to welcome Prof. Alexander Marynych (Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Ukraine) to Mathematics Münster as a Münster Research Fellow starting July 15. Previously, he spent several months at the Cluster as a Humboldt Fellow. Alexander Marynych is a Ukrainian probabilist who continues the traditions of the world-famous Kyiv school in the theory of stochastic processes. During his research stay in Münster, Alexander Marynych plans to continue his collaboration with several members of the Institute of Mathematical Stochastics, including Gerold Alsmeyer, Jonas Jalowy, Zakhar Kabluchko, and Matthias Löwe.

25 Mathematikbegeisterte Schülerinnen und Schüler der Jahrgangsstufen 10 und 11 aus Münster und dem Umland verbrachten vom 17. bis 22. Juni 2024 erlebnisreiche Tage bei der Mathematik-Sommerakademie auf Sylt. Prof. Dr. Michael Joachim und Prof. Dr. Matthias Löwe und die Doktorandinnen Isabel Lammers und Pia Dillmann hatten Workshops vorbereitet, die einen Blick in die Mathematik über den Schulstoff hinaus ermöglichte.

We are delighted that Dr. Philipp Reiser joins our Cluster as a new Young Research Fellow. He is motivated by the long-standing question of how the topology and geometry of Riemannian manifolds interact. During his stay at Mathematics Münster from 1st to 26th July 2024, he is especially collaborating with Masoumeh Zarei.

Prof. Dr. Annalisa Massaccesi (University of Padova) will give a talk on "Recent developments on Besicovitch's ½ problem" at the Colloquium Wilhelm Killing on 4 July 2024. The talk takes place at 2:15 pm in lecture hall M4.

Ursula Ludwig und Ralf Schindler sind als Redner zum bevorstehenden Europäischen Mathematik-Kongress (ECM) der European Mathematical Society eingeladen, der 2024 in Sevilla stattfinden wird. Der ECM ist ein bedeutendes internationales Ereignis, das alle vier Jahre stattfindet und Mathematiker aus ganz Europa und der ganzen Welt zusammenbringt.

In der dritten Folge unseres Podcasts spricht Gastgeber Simone mit Azul Fatalini, Doktorandin bei Mathematik Münster im Bereich Mengenlehre. Erfahrt mehr darüber, wie das Auswahlaxiom die Universen transformiert, in denen es gilt, warum Logik die Mathematik hinter der Mathematik ist und welches der schnellste Weg zum Eis ist.

Viele dynamische Prozesse lassen sich mithilfe von stochastischen partiellen Differentialgleichungen mathematisch beschreiben. Dr. Markus Tempelmayr, Postdoc an unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster, hat gemeinsam mit anderen Forschern einen neuen Ansatz gefunden, der dazu beiträgt, eine bestimmte Klasse solcher Gleichungen zu lösen. Die Ergebnisse wurden jetzt in der renommierten Fachzeitschrift "Inventiones Mathematicae" veröffentlicht.

We welcome Prof. Dr. Dima Sinapova from Rutgers University as a Münster Research Fellow. She is one of the leading experts worldwide on the study of aspects of the failure of the Singular Cardinal Hypothesis (SCH). During her stay at our Cluster in June 2024 she will continue her collaborations with Ralf Schindler.

The fellows 2023/2024 of the Young African Mathematicians (YAM) Fellowship Programme and representatives of the YAM network from Berlin, Bonn and Heidelberg and Münster met this Monday, 17 June, at Mathematics Münster for the final meeting.

Four new postdocs of Mathematics Münster introduced themselves at the MM Postdoc Colloquium on 13 June 2024. Adrian Riekert, James Stanfield, Allen Juntao Fang and Robin Sroka gave an insight into their fields of research.

Die 14 nordrhein-westfälischen Exzellenzcluster waren am Mittwoch eingeladen, die Arbeit der Forschungsverbünde in einer Ausstellung in der Bürgerhalles des Landtags NRW zu präsentieren. Unser Clustersprecher Prof. Dr. Mario Ohlberger informierte NRW-Wissenschaftsministerin Ina Brandes und andere Interessierte über die Arbeitsweise und Forschungsergebnisse von Mathematics Münster.

Große Freude für die Mathematik in Münster: Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) verlängert unseren Sonderforschungsbereich (SFB) 1442 "Geometry: Deformations and Rigidity". Die Forscherinnen und Forscher erhalten für weitere vier Jahre eine Förderung von rund 8,5 Millionen Euro, um die Geometrie sowohl als eigenständige Disziplin sowie als Werkzeug für andere mathematische Bereiche weiterzuentwickeln.

In der zweiten Episode unseres Mathematics Münster Podcasts "On A Tangent" trifft Simone Ramello auf Mert Bastug, einen Doktoranden im Bereich der partiellen Differentialgleichungen (PDEs) und der Variationsrechnung. Sie sprechen über Merts erste Begegnung mit der Mathematik, wie es möglich ist, Materialien mit Hilfe von PDEs zu verstehen, und wohin uns diese Forschung möglicherweise führen könnte.

We welcome Dr. Volker Schlue as a Visiting Scholar (on leave from the University of Melbourne). His stay is funded by the Humboldt Foundation. Volker is a promising mathematician in general relativity and nonlinear wave equations. He joined our Cluster in April 2024. During his extended stay at our Cluster until February 2025, he will contribute actively to all activities in the research group of Prof. Gustav Holzegel.

Das "Young African Mathematicians Fellowship Programme" ermöglicht begabten Masterabsolvent:innen aus Afrika, sich in einem anregenden, internationalen Umfeld wissenschaftlich weiterzuentwickeln und einen soliden Grundstein für den eigenen Werdegang zu legen. Seit Oktober forschen erstmals drei Stipendiaten am Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster.

Prof. Dr. Claudia Alfes-Neumann (University of Bielefeld) will give a talk on "Modular forms and their generalizations in number theory and geometry" on 16 May 2024. The talk takes place at 2:15 pm in lecture hall M4.

On 8 May 2024 the Mathematics Münster Graduate School hosted a Welcome Event which served as both an informative event for the new doctoral researchers, as well as a moment where the new and old members could meet.

Das Fach Mathematik der Universität Münster punktet im aktuellen CHE-Hochschulranking vor allem im Bereich der Forschung. Platzierungen in der Spitzengruppe gab es für die Aspekte "Veröffentlichungen pro Wissenschaftler", "Promotionen pro Professor" und "Drittmittel pro Wissenschaftler". Das CHE-Hochschulranking dient dazu, Studierenden und Studieninteressierten eine Orientierungshilfe bei der Wahl des Studienortes zu geben.

In der ersten Folge von "On A Tangent", dem neuen Mathematics Münster Podcast, spricht Host Simone Ramello mit Alex Tullini, Doktorand:in im Gebiet der Allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie. Es geht um Alex‘ Reise zur Mathematik, durch Orangenhaine, Sonnenfinsternisse und über die seltsame Ähnlichkeit einer Karriere in der Mathematik und einer Karriere in der Chirurgie.

In short scientific presentations, the Ada Lovelace Fellows 2023 will give insights into their research: Zahra Mohammadi Khangheshlaghi "Model Theory and The Free Factor Complex", Hanna Stange "Hyperuniformity and Rigidity of Perturbed Lattices" and Alex Tullini "From elliptic to hyperbolic PDEs: the things I did for the love of black holes". After the talks, there will be the opportunity to exchange ideas and meet the Fellows in the Common Room.

Die Girls' Day-Teilnehmerinnen haben am 25. April 2024 vielfältige Einblicke in die Berufswelt von Mathematikerinnen und den Studienalltag an der Uni Münster bekommen. Unter dem Motto "Girls go Mathematics" hatten der Fachbereich und der Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster ein vielfältiges Programm mit Rallye, Schnuppervorlesung und Knobelaufgaben zusammengestellt.

Wir freuen uns, dass uns am 25. April 2024, dem bundesweiten Girls' Day, 27 Schülerinnen besuchen, um die Berufswelt von Mathematikerinnen kennenzulernen. Das abwechslungsreiche Programm von 9 bis 15 Uhr beinhaltet eine Schnuppervorlesung von Prof. Dr. Angela Stevens, eine Rallye quer durch den Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik mit Besuch der Stochastik-Arbeitsgruppe, Knobelaufgaben, Studien- und Berufsweginformationen - und natürlich einen Mensa-Besuch.

Vom 17. bis zum 22. Juni 2024 bieten der Fachbereich Mathematik und Informatik und der Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster abwechslungsreiche Workshops auf der Insel Sylt an. Mathematikbegeisterte Schülerinnen und Schülern der Jahrgangsstufen 10 und 11 aus Münster und dem Umland können sich bis zum 21.04.2024 für die Sommerakademie anmelden.

Der Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster lädt alle Interessierten herzlich zur nächsten Ausgabe der öffentlichen Vortragsreihe "Brücken in der Mathematik" ein. Prof. Dr. Imma Valentina Curato (TU Chemnitz) stellt am 11. April 2024 um 18:30 Uhr im Planetarium des LWL-Naturkundemuseums die Superhelden hinter den KI-Technologien vor: die Algorithmen. Um Anmeldung wird gebeten.

Bringing together a small group of leading young experts in their respective research areas, the goal of the workshop is to stimulate collaboration and exchange between participants. The event will provide specialists' points of view on recent developments in stochastic analysis, with a particular focus on singular stochastic PDEs.

Der französische Mathematiker Michel Talagrand wurde in diesem Jahr mit dem angesehenen Abel-Preis ausgezeichnet, einer der höchsten Ehrungen in der Mathematik. Über Jahrzehnte hat Talagrand eine Reihe von Methoden entwickelt, um Zufallsprozesse besser zu verstehen. Auch am Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster wird mit ihnen gearbeitet.

Rund 200 Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker aus aller Welt kommen vom 25. bis 27. März im Schloss der Universität Münster zusammen, um sich über aktuelle Entwicklungen in der mathematischen Forschung auszutauschen. Ausgerichtet wird die Tagung von unserem Exzellenzcluster "Mathematik Münster: Dynamik - Geometrie - Struktur". Unser Sprecher Prof. Dr. Thomas Nikolaus erläutert den besonderen Charakter der Konferenz.

Der Bau- und Liegenschaftsbetrieb NRW (BLB NRW) hat jetzt mit den Bauarbeiten für das Centre of Mathematics Münster begonnen. Auf dem bislang unbebauten Grundstück zwischen Orléans-Ring und Einsteinstraße haben die Bagger übernommen. Direkt vor dem Hörsaalgebäude des Fachbereichs Mathematik und Informatik entsteht das CMM.

Prof. Dr. Eva Viehmann, Forscherin an unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster, erhält den Leibniz-Preis 2024 vor allem für ihre einflussreichen Arbeiten zur arithmetischen algebraischen Geometrie im Rahmen des Langlands-Programms. Prof. Dr. Urs Hartl, Dr. Stefania Trentin und Dr. João Lourenço, Mathematiker:innen aus Eva Viehmanns Umfeld, geben Einblicke in das komplexe Forschungsgebiet. Ihre Beiträge für mathematische Laien, Mathematik-Studierende und die mathematische Community ermöglichen eine Annäherung in mehreren Stufen.

Passend zum Motto "Spiele mit Mathematik" laden wir Schülerinnen und Schüler der 5. und 6. Klasse am 14.03.2024, dem Internationalen Tag der Mathematik, zu spannenden Spiel-Stationen ein. Von Brückenbau bis Mathefußball und einem Western-Duell ist alles dabei.

Passend zum Tag der Mathematik haben wir eine Sightseeingtour der besonderen Art vorbereitet. Der Mathe-Trail Münster gibt spannende Einblicke in die Stadtgeschichte – verknüpft mit mathematischen Rätseln. Die Aufgaben richten sich an Schülerinnen und Schüler ab der 7. Klasse, aber auch Jüngere und Ältere sind herzlich eingeladen, sich auf den Weg zu machen. Die Tour kann jederzeit gestartet werden, individuell nach Lust und Laune - und Wetter!

We welcome Dr. Thomas Leblé (Université de Paris Cité) as a Münster Research Fellow. He is a promising mathematician in probability theory and mathematical physics. During his stay at our Cluster from 19 February to end of March 2024 he will continue his collaborations with Martin Huesmann.

Die Association for Symbolic Logic (ASL) hat Dr. Andreas Lietz mit dem Sacks-Preis für die beste Doktorarbeit in mathematischer Logik im Jahr 2023 ausgezeichnet. Er ist derzeit Postdoc an der TU Wien. Er promovierte 2023 betreut von Prof. Dr. Ralf Schindler bei uns in Münster. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Andreas!

Nun ist es offiziell: Der Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster hat mit dem Department of Mathematical Sciences an der Universität Kopenhagen eine Kooperationsvereinbarung geschlossen. Über die Hintergründe und Chancen dieser Kooperation haben wir mit Thomas Nikolaus, Sprecher des Exzellenzclusters Mathematik Münster, gesprochen.

Er folgt damit auf Prof. Dr. Christopher Deninger, der die Position gemeinsam mit Prof. Dr. Mario Ohlberger seit dem Clusterstart 2019 als Doppelspitze innehatte. Mario Ohlberger bleibt weiterhin im Amt. "Ich freue mich darauf, ab jetzt als Sprecher zur erfolgreichen Entwicklung von Mathematics Münster beizutragen", sagte Thomas Nikolaus nach der Wahl, die durch die Generalversammlung aller Cluster-Mitglieder erfolgte.

This is a regular seminar of research groups from Bielefeld and Muenster about topics related to geometric group theory. In this way, it is very much related to research topics studied in the Cluster of Excellence in Muenster and the TRR 358 in Bielefeld-Paderborn.

Alle Promovierten, die ihre Doktorarbeit im vergangenem Semester abgeschlossen haben, waren am Montag zur Promotionsfeier des Fachbereichs Mathematik und Informatik ins Schloss eingeladen. The colloquium in honor of Prof. Dr. Michael Weiss starts on 2 February 2024 at 2 pm in lecture hall M2. Talks will be given by Prof. Dr. Søren Galatius (Kopenhagen) on "Homeomorphisms of contractible manifolds" and Prof. Dr. Manuel Krannich (KIT Karlsruhe) on "Surreal Pontryagin classes".

Explore how mathematics enhances information transmission. The text was written by Dr. Priyanga Ganesan, who spent several months as a Young Research Fellow and WiRe Fellow last year at Mathematics Münster.

Mit einem sehr anschaulichen Vortrag mit vielen animierten Darstellungen brachte Prof. Dr. Sebastian Hensel (LMU München) bei der jüngsten Ausgabe der öffentlichen Reihe "Brücken in der Mathematik" dem Publikum die Verbindungen zwischen Geometrie und Topologie näher - angefangen mit klassischen Resultaten von Gauß und Euler, bis hin zu ganz moderner Mathematik aus dem 21. Herzlichen Glückwunsch! Prof. Dr. Eva Viehmann, Forscherin an unserem Exzellenzcluster Mathematik Münster, erhält den Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz-Preis 2024 der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), den höchstdotierten deutschen Forschungsförderpreis. "Der Preis ist für mich eine große Ehre", sagt sie. An der Universität Münster habe sie ein "ideales Forschungsumfeld" gefunden, sowohl in der Mathematik allgemein als auch in ihrer Arbeitsgruppe für arithmetische Geometrie. "Der Preis macht diese guten Bedingungen noch angenehmer."

Zwei starke Forschungsinstitutionen haben jetzt eine intensive Zusammenarbeit vereinbart: Mathematikerinnen und Mathematiker der Universität Münster und Forschende des "Instituto de Matemática e Estatística" der "Universidade de São Paulo" (IME-USP) kooperieren im Rahmen des FAPESP-SPRINT-Förderprogramms für zwölf Monate auf dem Gebiet der Geometrie.
