Xerxes against Hellas. An Iconic Conflict from Different Perspectives

Peter Funke (Eds. w/ György Németh, Andras Patay-Horvath & Josef Wiesehöfer)

It is almost exactly 2500 years ago that the decisive clashes of the Persian Wars at Thermopylae, Salamis and Plataia took place. These battles were attributed world-historical significance in antiquity and, even more so, in the centuries that followed. The present volume is the outcome of a conference held in Budapest which celebrated the anniversary of Xerxes’ expedition against Hellas by discussing old and new questions related to the war and the history of its reception.

Postphenomenology and Technologies within Educational Settings

Markus Bohlmann (Eds. with Patrizia Breil)

Technologies such as tablets, plagiarism software, and learning videos are now an important part of teaching and learning around the world. The underlying human-technology relations that shape modern educational settings have a decisive influence on what education is and will be in the future. This volume applies the analytical tools of postphenomenology to the context of education. In three sections, the contributors present empirical evidence on the use of technology in schools, show conceptual convergences with current theories relevant to education and training, and challenge and reframe the technologically situated subject as the goal of education in relation to technology.

Place and Performance in Ancient Greece, Rome, and China

Hans Beck (ed. with Griet Vankeerberghen)

This book examines the construction of space and place in early China and the ancient Mediterranean through the lens of performances conducted in specific locations. It highlights conceptions of place and performance, seeing both as crucial to the production of cultural meaning and communal cohesion, and as heavily dependent on the prevailing political culture. Whether urban or rural, global or local, central or fringe, public or private, real or imagined, theatrical or ritual, the places and performances highlighted serve to show both commonalities and differences between the ancient Mediterranean and early China.

Koloniale Spuren in Münster und im Münsterland

Felicity Jensz (ed. with Philipp Erdmann)

Colonialism has become deeply inscribed in society as an ideology, a place of longing, an economic space or a tangible political demand - both globally and locally. Looking at Münster and the Münsterland region, the contributors uncover colonial patterns of thought, action and consumption that are proving to be a challenge for a post-colonial historical culture today. To this end, they focus on the diversity of colonial references in the region, their local particularities and their after-effects up to the present day, and invite further examination of the colonial history of the Westphalian provincial capital and its surroundings.

The Same, but Different? Monarchical Rule and Representation in the Hellenistic World

Christoph Michels, Hans Beck & Achim Lichtenberger (Eds.)

When Hellenistic kingship – with its “charismatic”, to some extent even excessive character – emerged in the wake of Alexander, it was perceived already by contemporaries as something genuinely new. This can be observed above all in the reception of central symbolic forms of expression and practices by non-Macedonian rulers. The studies collected in this volume focus on the development of concepts of rule and ideologemes as well as the cross-fertilization between the Hellenistic dynasties and in conversation with local traditions of rule.

Körper. Kult. Religion. Perspektiven von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart

Saskia Erhardt, Achim Lichtenberger & H.-Helge Nieswandt (w/ Jan Graefe, Angelika Lohwasser & Holger Strutwolf)

Body and soul are regarded as elementary components in the experience and living of religion or spirituality. Through certain practices such as asceticism, fasting or the consumption of certain foods and stimulants, people hope to experience spirituality. The hairstyle can signal membership of a particular religious group, and attributes of the body such as clothing or tattoos can be an expression of piety. This volume is the first to show, across time and geographical areas in a wide variety of religions and cultures, how people communicate statements about their religiosity through their bodies – whether by their own choice or by predetermined rules.

Habermas und die Genealogie nachmetaphysischen Denkens

Christian Thein

Up to the present day, the work of Jürgen Habermas has been read in philosophical contexts primarily through the lens of his communication and discourse theory from the 1980s and 1990s. Thein criticises the previously presented lines of reception of Habermas' genealogical reconstruction of a historical “discourse on belief and knowledge”, concentrating on the modern history of philosophy. At the same time, he works out problems concerning the project's position in current debates in critical philosophy.

Aneignungen der Geschichte: Narrative Evidenzstrategien und politische Legitimation im europäischen Mittelalter

Marcel Bubert (Ed.)

In the European Middle Ages, historical arguments were an effective means of presenting a case that could serve various purposes. One such purpose was political legitimisation. In order to realise this, the political field of the Middle Ages sometimes made considerable efforts to produce evidence, which involved not only the use of history, but also other practices of evidence production. History, as traditional and culturally sedimented ‘knowledge’ about the past, makes offers of use that enable very different appropriations. The aim of this volume is to examine this (regional) diversity of appropriations of history in the European Middle Ages.
