Körper. Kult. Religion. Perspektiven von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart

Saskia Erhardt, Achim Lichtenberger & H.-Helge Nieswandt (w/ Jan Graefe, Angelika Lohwasser & Holger Strutwolf)

Body and soul are regarded as elementary components in the experience and living of religion or spirituality. Through certain practices such as asceticism, fasting or the consumption of certain foods and stimulants, people hope to experience spirituality. The hairstyle can signal membership of a particular religious group, and attributes of the body such as clothing or tattoos can be an expression of piety. This volume is the first to show, across time and geographical areas in a wide variety of religions and cultures, how people communicate statements about their religiosity through their bodies – whether by their own choice or by predetermined rules.

Wie klingt Schwarz-Rot-Gold? Deutsch-deutsche Musikgeschichten

Michael Custodis (with illustrations by Niklas Schwartz)

What does black, red and gold sound like? In this book, Michael Custodis describes the diverse musical landscape in Germany over the last eight decades. From punk, hard rock, Schlager, classical and avant-garde to techno and hip-hop, influential musicians and works are presented in overview-like chapters that illustrate the close connection between music and the political events of contemporary history: Because even across the Iron Curtain, the FRG and the GDR remained in close contact for four decades, until they began writing a common musical history again in 1990.

Westphalia: History of a Land, its Cities and Regions in the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times

Werner Freitag

After decades, this book is a new regional history of Old Westphalia. It covers the Middle Ages and the early modern period — from Charlemagne's Saxon Wars in 772 to secularisation in 1803. The cover shows the Holy Kinship, Jesus' relatives, against the backdrop of the city of Dortmund. The altarpiece from 1470 also shows the churches and the agricultural fields. These pictorial contents stand for the city and agricultural history as well as for church and everyday life history, which make up essential parts of the book. Analysis and chronology guide the individual chapters.
