Geophysics programme at a glance

Why geophysics could interest me? What are my qualifications?

Geophysics is a physical discipline that studies structures and processes in the Earth (and other planets) from the surface to the core. The goals of investigation are very diverse and range from the study of earthquakes and volcanoes to the exploration of raw material deposits or archaeological sites. The subject makes an important contribution to the understanding of our livelihoods and to the solution of current global challenges.

Münster is the only location in the German-speaking world to offer both a pure bachelor's and master's degree program in geophysics, which covers aspects of theoretical and experimental geophysics in great breadth and which is simultaneously located in a physics department. The program is designed for students who have a strong interest in physics and are enthusiastic about geoscientific issues.

Geophysics studies in Münster at a glance

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees
  • Admission-free, small cohorts, good supervision
  • Strong mathematical-physical orientation
  • Geophysical focus on dynamic processes in the Earth's deep interior (geodynamics, plate tectonics), earthquake research (seismology, natural hazards), applied geophysics (helicopter and drone geophysics, archaeometry)
  • Early involvement in working groups at the institute, according to individual interest

General Informationen

 Bachelor of Science Geophysik

Prospective students who want to find out more about the Bachelor of Sciences Geophysics program can find general information about the program content, enrollment, and preparatory and introductory events under the heading of  Beginner's guide.

The program builds on basic physics and mathematics, the content of which is the same as that of the physics program in the first semesters, and is accompanied by introductory lectures in geophysics. Information on the course of study is summarized under the heading Bachelor of Science Geophysik.

 Master of Science Geophysics

Prospective students who want to find out more about the Master of Sciences Geophysics program can find general information about the program content, enrollment and admission requirements under the heading Change to Münster for a MSc.

The program includes the three main research areas of geophysics in Münster (geodynamics, seismology and applied geophysics), as well as elective courses from the fields of physics or geosciences. Information on the course of studies is summarized under the heading Master of Science Geophysics.
