Guide through the University jungle
Before it really starts...
... there is already a lot to organize. Where do I live? How can I finance my studies? Are there funding opportunities? A good starting point for answering these questions is here:
Before Starting at the University of Münster
- General Informations for First Year Students (not just Geophysics)
The University of Münster has put together the most important information for freshmen in a nutshell so that nobody loses track of things right from the start of their studies:
Essentials for First Year Students
Information on how to organize your studies at the University of Münster is also interesting (not only) for first-semester students. Which services does the university provide for students and which e-learning offers are there? Which courses are offered and where can I manage my study place, e.g. to take a leave of absence? All these things are explained in detail here:
The University of Münster is not a campus university - the city is the campus! But how do you find your way there? This is not particularly difficult for scientists, since most of the institutes are close to each other. An overview of the entire university, including an interactive map, can be found here:
Which courses should I attend in the first semester?
The individual courses are grouped thematically into so-called modules. An overview of the ideal course of study, from which you can see which modules should be completed and when, can be found here. Specifically, the following courses are on the program in the first semester:
- Geophysics I module: Introduction to general geophysics (lecture and exercise)
- Module Physics I: Dynamics of Particles and Particle Systems (lecture and exercise)
- Mathematical basics module: Mathematics for physicists 1 (lecture and exercises)
- Module Geosciences I: The Earth (lecture)
In general, you will find all courses offered in the university's electronic course catalogue.
In most modules, exercises are offered parallel to the lectures, in which content is deepened and practiced. As a rule, you will be admitted to the exam by passing the respective exercise.
In most cases, lecture and exercise documents are distributed via the electronic platform LearnWeb. There, enroll in the courses relevant to you to gain access to the materials.
Electronic Course Management
All courses at the WWU are managed using the LSF/QISPOS portal. After logging in with your WWU ID, you will find an overview of the achievements you have made so far during your studies:
In order for services rendered (e.g. admission to exams or exam results) to be posted in the LSF/QISPOS portal, you must first register for the relevant events and for the exams. An explanation of how this works in practice and which deadlines apply can be found here under "Organizational matters". Frequently asked questions about the QISPOS portal are answered here.
Important note: Under no circumstances should you fail to complete all necessary registrations in good time. A later registration is not possible!
Mentoring Program
Is everything really complicated? To make life easier for you as a first-year student, we offer mentoring for the bachelor's degree in geophysics. Here, students from higher semesters show you how everything works and give tips on studying and individual courses. Information on the mentoring program can be found here.
Examination office: For QISPOS problems and other formal questions about examinations, please contact the examination office of the departments of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
Student advisory service: If you have questions about the content of the geophysics degree, please contact the geophysics student advisory service. The Central Student Advisory Service of the University of Münster will help you with general questions about studying at the University of Münster (e.g. financing your studies, studying with children, housing, studying with disabilities, psychological counseling, ...).
