Welcome to the Geodynamics Group
The study area of the Geodynamics group in Münster is the investigation of the internal dynamics and structure of the Earth and other planets, as well as transport processes in oceans. Another aspect is the development of computer models to simulate geodynamical processes.
Planets represent complex dynamical systems that are characterised by convective currents in their interiors. The effects of these processes are observable in a variety of phenomena, such as volcanic eruptions and earthquakes on Earth.
The high temperatures and pressures within planets can hardly be reproduced in the laboratory. In general, the equations that describe the processes cannot be solved analytically. With the help of computers, however, it is possible to simulate relevant scenarios numerically and to analyse the physical processes in the interior of planets.
