I. Exam module and registration requirements

The examination module consists of a Bachelor's thesis, which is supervised by an examiner from the IfK and for which 10 ECTS points (+5 ECTS for the colloquium) are awarded. This means that the exam module in the Single-subject Bachelor's programme contributes 10 percent to the overall grade of the Bachelor's programme, the same as any other module. In the Two-subject Bachelor's programme, the thesis is offset in a ratio of 4:4:2:1 against the credits from both subjects and General Studies.

The following applies to students in the Single-subject Bachelor's programme of examination regulations V20 and V15: The prerequisite for registering for the Bachelor's thesis is the successful completion of introductory module I (module 1), introductory module II (module 2), methods module I (module 3), methods module II (module 4), at least two of the four thematic modules (modules 8, 9, 10 or 11) and the research practice module (module 12).

The following applies to students in the Two-subject Bachelor's programme of examination regulations V20: The prerequisite for registering for the Bachelor's thesis is the successful completion of introductory module I (module 1), introductory module II (module 2), methods module I (module 3), methods module II (module 4), at least one of the two thematic modules (modules 6, 7, 8 or 9) and the research practice module (module 10).

The following applies to students in the Two-subject Bachelor's degree programme of examination regulations V09: The prerequisite for registering for the Bachelor's thesis is the successful completion of introductory module I (module 1), introductory module II (module 2), methods module I (module 3), methods module II (module 4), at least one of the two thematic modules (modules 8, 9, 10 or 11) and the research practice module (module 12).

II Procedure of the exam module

1. Submission of the topic proposal

Firstly, you submit a topic proposal for the Bachelor's thesis and your transcript of records (overview of grades from QISPOS). With this proposal, only the idea for the topic is formulated, the elaboration takes place later in an exposé. With your topic proposal, you can also suggest a first and second examiner for your thesis. All professors at the department and all research assistants are authorised examiners. Please note that this is only a suggestion. The department will determine the allocation of first and second examiners.
You must send your topic proposal and the transcript of records by email to kowi.pruefungsanmeldung@uni-muenster.de before the deadline.

2. Feedback on the allocation of examiners

After the deadline, the proposals will be reviewed by the IfK and the Bachelor's theses will be allocated to the first and second examiners. Approximately one to two weeks later, you will be notified of your supervisor.

3. Consultation phase and submission of the exposé

The counselling phase for the preparation of the exposé then begins. The exposé is a brief description of the Bachelor's thesis in which the research question and structure of the planned thesis are concretised in consultation with the first examiner. The exposé should provide a helpful working basis for the first examiner and the examination candidate. It should be submitted by the deadline either to the secretary's office, via the mailbox or by email to the first examiner. The first examiner will also inform you about the dates and requirements of the colloquium.
After submitting the exposé, the first examiner can provide further information on narrowing down or elaborating the topic. Under certain circumstances, the acceptance of the exposé is not only linked to revision requirements, but even to a completely new draft. If your first examiner agrees with your exposé, only then may you register bindingly to the Examination Office.

4. Registration of the Bachelor’s thesis at the Examinations Office

After the exposé has been accepted by the first examiner, you must register for the exam module. To do this, fill out a registration form and send it by email to the first examiner for a signature. The registration form is then sent to the Examinations Office by the first examiner. The six- or eight-week processing period begins when the first examiner sends the email. The Examinations Office will confirm the topic and the exact submission deadline in writing. It is not necessary to register for the exam module in QISPOS.

5. Submission of the Bachelor’s thesis

After the six-week or eight-week (start of studies from winter semester 2020/21) processing period, the Bachelor's thesis must be submitted to the Examinations Office by the deadline. Two printed copies (typewritten, bound, paginated) including a declaration of plagiarism and two Compact Discs (CDs) are required. The Bachelor's thesis must be available on the CD, once as a Word document and once as a PDF. The Bachelor's thesis must not exceed 30 pages of text, excluding the title page, table of contents, bibliography and appendix.

Please note: If the deadline is not met, the work is graded as "insufficient" and is therefore failed. After that, the work can only be repeated once. Deadline extensions must be clarified with the Examinations Office and are generally only possible in case of illness with a medical certificate.

6. Assessment

The first and second examiners have six weeks after submission of the Bachelor's thesis to assess it. The grade of the Bachelor's thesis is calculated from the arithmetic mean of the grades of the first and second examiners.
