Career Opportunities
Potential career fields are diverse and constantly evolving. Graduates of the “Knowledge and Communication” programme acquire universal skills that open the doors to various and growing career opportunities. Students learn how to tackle the challenges of the knowledge society – skills that are increasingly sought after in professions dealing with knowledge, particularly in data forms. These skills include strategic competence in knowledge management, data analysis and processing, as well as analytical communication expertise.
As a result, the programme not only offers opportunities for careers in research-oriented professions but also qualifies graduates for work in public relations in universities, industry, museums, cultural institutions, and authorities, as well as in cultural organisations and media companies. In all these areas, experts (e.g. social media experts, data analysts, knowledge brokers, communication consultants) with relevant knowledge are needed to shape the exchange of knowledge in science, civil society, politics, and business.
As the “Knowledge and Communication” programme is taught in English, students from diverse cultural backgrounds can come and build an international profile together. Through collaborative learning and working experiences, students acquire not only hard skills but also highly valued soft skills, such as intercultural cooperation and communication. These abilities are essential for companies and organisations operating on an international scale.
Practical Experience
Even though the main focus of the course is academic qualification, there are numerous opportunities to gain practical experience. The degree programme offers a broad repertoire of applied knowledge (e.g. automated data processing) and analytical skills, which can also be tested in projects throughout the programme. In addition to the research projects undertaken in the second and third semesters, Module 3 in the first semester provides an early insight into communication practice, often in collaboration with industry partners.
Furthermore, the Centre for Media Practice at the Department of Communication offers a variety of voluntary workshops each semester to complement your studies. These workshops include various software applications (Adobe software, MAXQDA, etc.) that will be relevant to professional practice and essential core skills for future careers (e.g. writing press releases, basics of search engine optimisation, photography, web design, etc.). The University of Münster’s Career Service also supports students with a range of free seminars on individual professional profiling (e.g. on project management), workshops with employers, soft skills seminars (e.g. on networking in the workplace), and application training. Students can also utilise our database to find student positions, internships, and post-graduation job opportunities tailored to graduates of the department. Other opportunities for hands-on learning are available through a number of student associations, including Radio Q, Campus Relations and move.
