"MünsterMacher": IfK students present impressive everyday heroes from Münster in four podcast episodes

(08.08.2024) A city like Münster thrives on the commitment of individuals who dedicate themselves to the common good, diversity, and participation. Therefore, students of the media practice course "Listening is key – Podcast and radio journalism" set out to search for everyday heroes from the Münster area and met individuals who, despite their remarkable efforts, often remain largely unnoticed. The resulting podcast aims to give more attention to these impressive people.

The media practice seminar "Listening is key – Podcast and radio journalism" provided students with practice-oriented basics of radio journalism. Under the guidance of Markus Dichmann, the participants developed the idea for their own podcast format and created various audio contributions for the individual episodes. The students followed the hospital clowns of the University Hospital at the children’s palliative care unit, participated in a meeting at the queer center KCM, and visited two rehearsals of the inclusive Slash Theater, which also features people with disabilities on stage. They spoke with a former volunteer of the listening service Nightline and an employee of the Syrian restaurant elbēn, which serves as a meeting place for various cultures. Furthermore, the students discovered how an ambulance fulfills last wishes, why measures against insect decline are important, and who helps the homeless of the city during the summer heat.

Under the title "MünsterMacher," the podcast reveals who the people behind these impressive activities are. Through this, the students aim to give the everyday heroes of Münster the attention they deserve – and bring more prominence to important issues. A total of four episodes, each spotlighting two exciting stories, were produced during the seminar. The episodes last about 20-30 minutes and can be accessed via Spotify or Apple Podcasts. The production was supported by the two student assistants Jannis Gulde and Henning Karkoska.
