The reception of media coverage on Islam is examined as a part of educational research projects. Numerous content analyses indicate that Muslims and Islam are largely reported on in a context of violence and conflict. However, little is known about how these media representations of Islam are received. Starting from this desideratum, the research projects use qualitative methods to investigate a) how modes of reception differ along central categories of difference (religious identity/gender/education) and b) what these modes of reception say about social cohesion.
Stephan Niemand's dissertation is the first systematic analysis of the effects of changes in everyday life, such as parenthood, change of residence or new partnerships, on the use of media. Based on an ethnographically oriented panel study with 25 couples’ households, he precisely worked out that in such transitional phases changes in the daily routines trigger a profound change in domestic media use. The study thus provides a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness between everyday life and media use as well as of the question why media use changes over the course of a lifetime. At the same time, the focus on transitions in everyday life opens up a new and promising research perspective for Communication and Media Studies.
The dissertation was published in 2020 and awarded both the WWU Münster Dissertation Prize for outstanding doctoral theses and the Dissertation Prize of the Sociology of Media and Communication Division of the DGPuK (The German Communication Association).

The Internet has spread massively through its domestication: What was the adaptation process like? How did couples integrate the Internet into their daily lives, and what changes did mobile technologies bring? How have domestic media repertoires and communication cultures changed? These and other questions are answered by the DFG-funded qualitative long-term study with couples’ households. In ethnographically oriented household studies, a systematically compiled sample of 25 couples was interviewed about their domestic media use four times between 2008 and 2016. The findings were supplemented by a study of 16 couples of the online avant-garde in 2016.
The overall analysis of the project series was published in 2019:
