Knowledge graphs can now be queried with Facepager
(17.03.2025) The ‘Facepager for NFDI’ project has been successfully completed. The open source programme Facepager, which makes it easier for researchers to get started with automated data collection, has been expanded in recent months specifically for applications in the field of digital humanities.
The project was led by Junior Professor Dr Jakob Jünger and carried out together with Lennart Höfig at the University of Münster. Funding was provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG) as part of NFDI4Culture (Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz).
Facepager has so far been used primarily for research in the field of computational social science. Funding from the NFDI4Culture programme has now created an important basis for making the tool usable for data sources and applications in the humanities. New materials and functions have been developed for this purpose, which have already been successfully tested in research-orientated courses and can be successively expanded in the future.
The implementation was divided into four central modules: the development of presets, the creation of tutorials, the expansion of workflows and a new Facepager release. This opens up new possibilities for researchers and students without programming knowledge:
1. querying knowledge graphs via SPARQL - for example to collect socio-demographic data.
2. multi-level surveys using pipelines - to map complex data relationships between actors.
3. processing linked open data - Facepager can extract data from rdf/xml, json-ld or ttl and make it available in tabular form.
These enhancements facilitate access to APIs for researchers and significantly expand the potential uses of Facepager beyond social media platforms. The project thus contributes to the sustainable strengthening of the digital research infrastructure in the humanities and social sciences.
