The IfK mourns the loss of Dr Marianne Ravenstein
(30.10.24) Dr Marianne Ravenstein, former Academic Director of the IfK, passed away on 26 October at the age of 67. As Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching and Equal Opportunities Officer at the University of Münster, Marianne Ravenstein rendered great services to the university. However, the IfK was also significantly characterised by her knowledge, her ideas and her commitment for over twenty years.
From 1989 until her election as full-time Vice-Rector for Studies and Teaching in the Rectorate of the University of Münster in 2012, Dr Marianne Ravenstein worked as an Academic Councillor, Senior Councillor and Director at the IfK. She was centrally involved in the management of the department, participating in numerous committees and many important decisions. And so it is also thanks to her that the IfK Münster has been steadily expanded since the mid-1990s and is now not only one of the most renowned, but also one of the largest and most productive communication science departments in Germany.
Dr Marianne Ravenstein was also of central importance to the students as a lecturer and student advisor. During her time at the IfK, she was an important contact person in her always busy office hours. She always made time for students' concerns and had an open ear for problems of all kinds. She also taught in numerous seminars, particularly on media history, media systems and media policy, media ethics, research methods, media effects and entertainment research. And so Marianne Ravenstein also influenced the studies of numerous students, many of whom are now working in key positions in academia and the media industry.
Dr Marianne Ravenstein not only helped shape the IfK through her tireless commitment, but also through her extensive knowledge of the department and the university, her large network and her enormous ability to organise helpful solutions for smaller and larger problems in the academic and teaching world. In this way, she enabled many people to research, teach and learn under the best possible conditions during her years at the IfK.
The faculty and alumni of the IfK will remember Dr Marianne Ravenstein with gratitude. Our special condolences go to her family and loved ones.
