Thesis defence training

Target group: doctoral researchers (at a final stage of a doctorate)

In their thesis defence, doctoral researchers have to present their research to a board of examiners and then answer critical questions. This course is designed to optimally prepare the participants for this situation. In the first part of the course, participants receive practical tips for their introductory presentation: how to structure the presentation, how to build up the central argument, what language to use, and more. The second part of the course addresses problems that can occur during the discussion. We look at various types of difficult questions and discuss strategies that participants can use to respond to them. In the third part, participants have the chance to practice their presentation and receive feedback from the group and the trainer. Throughout the entire course, we address questions about formalities surrounding the thesis defence.

Objectives:

  • Give a convincing and well-structured presentation

  • Respond confidently to critical questions

  • Be well prepared and feel confident about the thesis defence

  • Prepare central elements of the thesis defence presentation (e.g. research questions, main messages, and argument structure)

Facilitator: Dr. Malte Engel (Argumentationskompetenz)
