Shifting gears from skimming to deep dive

Target group: doctoral and postdoctoral researchers

Reading is an essential skill for researchers, but often feels like a time-consuming task, leaving you overwhelmed and unmotivated. What if you could read more efficiently, shift gears in your reading speed, and in doing so increase your comprehension and motivation? In this interactive workshop, you will discover and practise a set of reading techniques. By adjusting the pace and level of scrutiny based on the reading material and purpose, you will be able to focus better and enjoy reading tasks more. The workshop consists of two half-day sessions (13 March 2026, 10am–1pm & a virtual follow-up on 27 March 2025 from 10am–1pm), with additional self-learning exercises between the two sessions.

Objectives:

  • Skim and scan texts rapidly to identify key information and save time

  • Dive deep with active reading and annotation strategies to improve comprehension and retention

  • Develop a personal reading toolkit to increase performance and motivation

Facilitator: Sabine Schneider, M.A., M.A. (CERes)
