Financial assistance
The Student Advice and Counselling Centre (ZSB) offers extensive information and advice on financing your studies. Below you will find more information on special types of student funding for (prospective) students with disabilities, as well as corresponding contact details.
BAföG (German Federal Training Assistance Act)
For students with disabilities, we recommend applying for BAföG in any case, especially because disability- or illness-related expenses can shift the eligibility limit for funding. Please note the relevant application deadlines.
You can obtain more information on BAföG and instructions on how to apply under “BAföG & Co” on the Studierendenwerk Münster website.
Social benefits (disability-related added expenses)
The term “disability-related added expenses” refers to additional costs that may arise during your studies due to disability-related expenses.
These include:
- training-related added expenses (e.g. higher costs due to personal technical aids, personal study assistants, sign language interpreters, mobility aids)
- non-education-related added expenses (e.g. higher costs due to special nutrition, healthcare).
To obtain financing to cover these disability-related added expenses, i.e. the additional costs you have incurred, you will have to submit the required applications to your health or care insurance provider or the regional social welfare agency (integration assistance of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe - LWL).
We recommend consulting with the Student Advice and Counselling Centre (ZSB) before submitting an application. In order to ensure that benefits are granted at the start of your studies, your application should be submitted at the same time as your application for admission or immediately after you have been accepted.
Scholarships and grants
Various talent promotion organisations offer scholarships for strongly committed students and doctoral candidates. In addition, some foundations award scholarships that are closely related to a specific type of impairment. In addition to financial aid, their support often includes invitations to participate in seminars, summer academies and other events. The spectrum of these events ranges from subject-specific to overarching social, societal and political topics.
You can obtain further information on scholarships and advice on funding opportunities from the Student Advice and Counselling Centre (ZSB).
Semester ticket
The semester ticket is available to all regularly enrolled students at the University of Münster and, as of April 2024, is valid on all forms of local and regional public transportation nationwide. In justified cases, students with disabilities can apply for a refund if they do not use the semester ticket.
For more information on the semester ticket, visit the website of AStA at the University of Münster.
