Combination of studies and top- level sports
The WWU extends the contract as "partner university of top- level sports" after 20 years
On February 3, 2023, representatives of the WWU, of the "adh", of the Olympic staging post NRW and of the "Studierendenwerk" met for re- signing the revised contract that has already been concluded 20 years ago. The project is important for top- level athletes since it supports their dual career.
With not less than 50 guests - including Münsters' mayor, Klaus Rosenau, the former secretary of the Interior of NRW, Dr. Ingo Wolf, and the chairperson of the adh, Jörg Förster - the contract was ceremonially signed at the WWUs' "Schloss".
The project at the WWU has already supported more than 300 top- level athletes within these 20 years. Currently, there are more than 60 athletes from 13 faculties of the WWU in the project. Their support includes individualised examination dates, mentoring and study advice. Contact persons are Prof. Dr. Bernd Strauß and Dr. Barbara Halberschmidt. The pictures belong to Peter Leßmann - WWU.
2002-2022
The University of Münster as a partner university of top-level sports
Since February 25th, 2002, the University of Münster became the first partner university of top-level sports in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Currently, there are over 1.000 university students who are part of top-level sports squads who successfully study and practice at the same time. However, the schedules are tight, examination dates are fixed, there are many competitions and practices – and on the other hand the students need foundations for a later work life.
Knowing those difficult barriers, the University of Münster and its partners, for example the German Association for University Sports and the Olympic basis of Westphalia and other partners want to provide better study and practice opportunities for squad-athletes.
“Flexibility” is one of the most important key words; and top performance is most significant: however, nobody should expect “light” studies with less workload.Balancing studies and top-level sports is not easy but possible!
