ProKIS (Processes of AI-related Change in Schools)

The SchuDiDe (School Development: Digital-Democratic) project network identifies innovative ways and methodological approaches that use the conditions and potential of a school characterized by digitality to better fulfill its function as an institution that promotes democracy in society. To this end, specific concepts of digital-democratic school development are being tested and prepared for broad application in regular school practice.
As part of the Münster sub-project ProKIS - Processes of AI-related change in schools, we are focusing on researching the effects and potential of text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) for democratic school development. Text-generating AI technologies, such as GPT and LaMDA, are accessible to the general public through digital assistance programs such as ChatGPT. They therefore provide an opportunity to reflect on established forms of learning and working in schools, such as traditional homework. However, examining how schools can integrate these AI technologies not only opens up much-needed discussions, but also new ways of shaping the digital transformation in the school context in a participatory manner.
ProKIS aims to develop and implement strategies for concrete changes in schools in collaboration with school administrators, teachers, students and parents. To achieve this goal, we are using a design-based research approach to develop a training program for teachers and stakeholders from the second phase of teacher training. In addition to concrete proposals and strategies for participatory processes, this offer will also test design thinking approaches for democratically shaping change in schools. In a first step, a prototype seminar will be held with student teachers at the University of Leipzig, which will be followed by two rounds of further training at a further training provider in Saxony.
In this process, we are building on proven methods from the LArS.nrw and DAWLS projects and working closely with training providers and target group representatives to tailor the training program optimally to their needs and experiences. The training program and its implementation are scientifically monitored and evaluated by our research team.
