Higher-semester enrolment (all applicant groups)

An application for a higher semester via the application portal of the University of Münster is required if the desired degree programme is subject to admission restrictions in higher semesters. An application for the winter semester is possible for odd semesters (3rd, 5th), for the summer semester for even semesters (2nd, 4th, 6th). Exceptions are the degree programmes Business Administration, Economics, Law, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy. Here it is possible to apply for all higher semesters.

  • Application periods

    • Winter semester: beginning of August until 15 September
    • Summer semester: beginning of February until 15 March
  • Application groups

    Admission to the higher subject-related semester is based on membership of a specific application group. In contrast to an application for the 1st semester, the school leaving certificate grade and waiting semesters are not relevant (see Admission to higher semester). These are the application groups:

    1. Students for upgrading
      Students who are already enrolled at the University of Münster at a lower semester in the same degree programme (corresponding subject and degree name) and have earned academic credit for placement at a higher semester in this degree programme
    2. Transfer applicants
      Transfer applicants who are already enrolled in the same degree programme* (corresponding subject and degree name) at a university located in the EU
    3. Programme changing applicants
      Applicants who wish to change majors (lateral entrants) but have never been enrolled in the same degree programme* at a university in the EU

  • Application process

    1. Online application
      Apply via the application portal of the University of Münster for the desired semester and select your application group.
    2. Confirmation email with application number
      After submitting your online application, you will receive a confirmation e-mail with an attached check sheet containing your application number.
    3. Upload the required documents
      Log in to the info portal of the application to upload the required documents.
    4. Review and status
      After uploading all required documents, the Student Admissions Office will check your application and inform you of the status in the info portal of the application. Please check the status of your application in the info portal regularly.

    2. Transfer applicants

      - Semester certificate (in case you have studied medicine, pharmacy or dentistry outside of Germany, please obtain a Transfer of Credit Notice (Anrechnungsbescheid) issued by the State Examinations Office)

      - In case you are currently enrolled in pharmacy and dentistry in Germany and applying for these degree programmes, please upload a certificate of achievement

      - In case you are currently enrolled in biosciences and biology and applying for these degree programmes, please upload a semester certificate and a placement certificate*

      - Intermediate examination certificate (only for the degree programme law)
    3. Programme changing applicants

      - Semester certificate

      - Placement certificate*

      - Transfer of Credit Notice (Anrechnungsbescheid) issued by the State Examinations Office (only for medicine, dentistry or pharmacy)

    *Note: You can apply for a placement certificate from the respective degree course advisor. In exceptional cases, however, the respective examination office is responsible. Details can be found in your upload area in the info portal.
