Study and Teaching

How can studying and teaching be made sustainable? At the University of Münster, “Education for Sustainable Development” (BNE) is the guiding concept. BNE refers to education that enables people to think and act in a sustainable way. Among other things, this involves learning and teaching environments, skills development for teachers and multipliers. The National Action Plan specifies, for example, the implementation of BNE in curricula, syllabuses and training regulations as well as in informal learning. This can be achieved by imparting specialist knowledge on sustainability and the latest empirical findings and by critically reflecting on inter- and transdisciplinary contexts.

Development is sustainable when people around the world, now and in the future, can live in dignity and develop their needs and talents while respecting planetary boundaries. Such a social transformation requires strong institutions, participatory decision-making and conflict resolution, knowledge, technologies and new patterns of behaviour.

In sports science teaching, we are beginning to apply BNE in the training of student teachers and young researchers. This can take very different forms, as lecturers and students report from their courses.
