Political Islamism and Nationalism

Experts discussed the relationship between political Islamism and authoritarian nationalism at an international conference at the University of Münster on November 29 and 30, 2023. The event, organized by the Cluster of Excellence "Religion and Politics" and the research unit "Islam and Politics" at the Center for Islamic Theology (ZIT) at the University of Münster in cooperation with the Federal Ministry of the Interior, shed light on non-violent Islamism and the subtle methods it uses to challenge the democratic order. It also addressed the influence of foreign governments and the fusion of legalistic Islamism and nationalism. The program also included contributions on the situation in countries such as Turkey, Morocco and Yemen. The keynote speech was given by political scientist Prof. Dr. Ahmet T. Kuru from San Diego State University.

A public discussion on 29.11.23 also dealt with the relationship between anti-Semitism, nationalism and Islamism.
