Lecture Series on the Formation of Norms in the Past and in the Present
The summer semester 2010 lecture series of the cluster of excellence “Religion and Politics” focuses on the formation of norms in the past and in the present. In their lectures, the thirteen academics draw a chronological line from the Ten Commandments to modern constitutional law.
In the first half of the semester, the lectures deal with the specific ideas of normativity of past eras from a historical angle, while the lectures in the second half systematically approach current issues. They all enquire about the roots, the justification and the original cause of norms. Their binding effect and enforceability and the diversity of varying norms in pluralism will also be examined. The state as legislator will of course not take centre stage at the lecture series. Outside official law-making, regulations, expectations and commands have always been copious, too.
The public lecture series presents the cluster of excellence’s thematic pillar of “Normativity” and is aimed at all who are interested, particularly also students of all disciplines. It is organised by Prof. Dr. Nils Jansen and Prof. Dr. Peter Oestmann of the Department of Legal History, Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU). The lectures will be held on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. (6:15 p.m. sharp) at lecture theatre F2. (vvm)
