Will oil and gas become unaffordable? Emissions trading from 2027 and its social consequences

Thursday, 23 January, 7 pm, vhs-Forum, Aegidiimarkt 2

On Thursday, 23 January 2025, the Münsteraner Klimagespräche will enter the next round. On the topic of ‘Will oil and gas become unaffordable? Emissions trading from 2027 and its social consequences’, a discussion with impulse speeches will take place, moderated by ZIN scientist Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt. The climate discussion starts at 7 pm in the vhs-Forum, Aegidiimarkt 2. Admission is free.

Heating with oil and gas and filling up with petrol will become significantly more expensive from 2027. This is not only predicted by research institutes and economic forecasts. The European emissions trading for fuels will be introduced in 2027, which is intended to reduce emissions from road transport. This is the aim of the EU agreement (ETS 2 for short) for climate protection.

In this Münsteraner Klimagespräch, Prof. Dr. Tillmann Buttschardt will explain why emissions trading can be an effective instrument for reducing CO2. The landscape ecologist poses the question: ‘Where do we stand, what can we do?’. In short impulse speeches and discussion rounds with the audience, the effects of European and national emissions trading for Münster in the areas of heating, transport/mobility and consumption will be presented and discussed. For example, the effects of rising carbon pricing and the decreasing number of available certificates on the economy and society will be discussed. The question will also raised as to whether these costs should be offset by a ‘climate money’. Dr. Mathis Bönte, lawyer and climate activist, and Thomas Weber, graduate engineer and energy efficiency consultant from the NRW consumer advice centre, will give impulse speeches on this topic.

The Münsteraner Klimagespräche are prepared by a group of sponsors consisting of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Sustainability Research at the University of Münster (ZIN), the Protestant Forum, the Environmental Forum Münster e. V., the Advisory Board for Municipal Development Cooperation, the Advisory Board for Climate Protection and the Münster Adult Education Centre (vhs).
