New Münster Research Fellow: Rustum Choksi
We welcome Prof. Dr. Rustum Choksi (McGill University) as a new Münster Research Fellow. He is a leading figure in the applied calculus of variations with contributions from mathematical materials science all the way to mathematical image processing. During his stay at our Cluster from 4 April to 21 May 2022, he will collaborate with Prof. Dr. Benedikt Wirth and other scientists from Mathematics Münster.
Rustum Choksi is particularly well-known for his work on pattern formation in different contexts. Those include the rigorous analysis of patterns in superconductors via energy scaling laws as well as the structure and geometry of minimizers of energy functionals with long-range interactions, which typically come in the form of minimal surface models combined with nonlocal integrals.
However, he likewise worked on interesting approaches in inverse problems and image processing, introducing forms of maximum entropy regularization, which shift the paradigm toward regularization at the level of the probability distribution on the space of images - a viewpoint becoming more and more important in the age of machine learning.
Recently he was one of the three elected co-chairs organizing the SIAM Materials Science conference 2020/21, one of the biggest events in the calculus of variations community.
In Münster, he will give several lectures during his stay, for example, he will talk about "Three Variational Problems Addressing Three Physical Paradigms" at the Colloquium Wilhelm Killing on Thursday, 21 April 2022.
