In July 2016, under the title Third Mission impossible, the Tagesspiegel stated with regard to science transfer at German universities: "The life sciences find it easier than the cultural sciences to translate their research results into social benefits. A survey has now shown that there is great interest in science among the general public. However, the humanities and social sciences are also of interest to the general public." Even though the Tagesspiegel certainly does not have the last word in this discussion, this statement reflects the central challenge facing both students and researchers in the humanities. The aim of the project Circus | Studies is to make the knowledge generated fruitful for those involved in circus practice.
In the project Circus Dramaturgy on the Border between Art and Academia, the semiotic method for the analysis of contemporary circus performances that Trapp developed in her dissertation was used to develop a feedback method that can be used in the artistic creation process.
From the very beginning, the aim was to give the results of the exchange between art and academia visibility beyond the academic environment. For this reason, the project was accompanied by documentary filmmakers from the production company BENDA Films. Instead of a classical academic book publication that reveals the feedback method, a documentary film was produced that enables the transfer of the format to other courses of study (cultural semiotics, media semiotics etc.) or universities (especially international artist schools and art academies) and contributes to the dissemination and transfer of the method.
The film offers a starting point for the project Semiotic Matters! and is is now being exhibited internationally at relevant circus festivals and academic conferences.
