If one asks today about the first associations with the circus, the interviewees are generally very much in agreement: the clown, the (wild) animal and the trapeze artist seem to be directly linked to concepts of the circus. This is due to the fact that the reception of the circus in literature, pop culture, music and advertising refers exclusively to the peak phase of the circus at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. The romanticised image of the circus is thus constantly (unreflectedly) carried into our everyday culture. This creates the impression of a stagnating genre, which never existed in this (romanticised) form, further more: it contradicts the self-image of the New and Contemporary Circus - Circus is Art.
This starting point leads to a strong educational responsibility of circus studies and requires communication with the public. For this reason, the project is in close contact with renowned German and international media (including WDR Fernsehen, WDR Hörfunk, Taz, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitun, Achener Rundschau, Circus Talks).
