Guest lecture by Dr. Shangyuan Wu from Singapore on measures to curb fake news

(24.04.2024) As concerns of fake news continue to rise in the digital age, more attention has been placed on how this issue might be addressed by actions of the community or the state. In a guest lecture on Wednesday, May 5, Dr Shangyuan Wu from the National University of Singapore evaluates the effectiveness of civic and legislative interventions for decreasing the spread of fake news.

With the title “Tackling the ‘Fake News’ Problem: Exploring Civic and Legislative Interventions to Curb the Spread of Fake News”, Wu references her own research into both the community reporting of fake news on social media and the establishment of anti-fake news laws by the state. Focus is placed on how members of the public may or may not be motivated to report the fake news they encounter online and how news literacy programmes may step up to ad-dress their hesitations. The need for governments seeking to enact anti-fake news laws to adequately build legislative legitimacy is addressed as well. Wu notes that while not everyone will fall prey to fake news, more can be done to increase the quality of news and information that circulates within a society.

Dr Shangyuan Wu is a lecturer and media researcher at the Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore. Her research areas of interest are journalism in the digital age, with a focus on automated, data, and online journalism, as well as global journalism studies and comparative media analyses. She has published in the peer-reviewed journals of Digital Journalism, Journalism Studies, and Information, Communication and Society, among others, and currently serves as the International Engagement Editor of Digital Journalism. Wu also has a practical background in journalism, as she has previously worked as a senior broadcast journalist in Singapore, covering the areas of politics, defence, and education.

The Department of Communication (IfK) is pleased to welcome Dr Shangyuan Wu in Münster. The guest lecture takes place in room JO 1 (Johannisstr. 4) on May 5 from 16:00 to 18:00. Anyone interested is warmly invited to attend the lecture. Prior registration is not necessary.
