Writing for effect (B2/C1)
Zielgruppe: University staff who write and publish English texts and seek to make them more convincing by adopting the reader's perspective.
To write effectively, we must not only follow the rules of a language, but also take into account what the reader expects and needs. This can be described as reader-directed writing. A good example of where this is of particular importance are project proposals. To convince the reader to fund your project requires, you need to consider what they want expect, and present your project along these lines clearly and concisely. This also applies to apparently simple texts, such as emails asking the participants of a workshop to do necessary (rather than ‘mandatory' or ‘obligatory') preparatory assignments. I recommend taking the “English Grammar (not only) for Germans” course before this one.
