Working successfully in an International Context

Target group: interested staff

Working with international students and in a multicultural team is part of everyday life at the University of Münster. However, different ways of thinking and living come together here.

What is polite? How does indirect communication work? What status do you have in which role?

These are just a few examples of the areas in which different ideas in an intercultural context can lead to misunderstandings and make cooperation more difficult.

The workshop shows how cultural differences can be recognized by changing perspectives. In addition, participants learn strategies that enable them to deal professionally with intercultural encounters in everyday life and work.

The seminar is aimed at participants who are interested in the topic of intercultural competence and would like to expand their skills, perhaps also in preparation for a stay abroad.

Your benefit:

  • You will gain insights into possible causes of intercultural misunderstandings.
  • You will expand your strategies of acting in an intercultural context by analysing a variety of situations.
  • You will deal with conflict resolution strategies in an intercultural context.
  • You will learn about the limits of intercultural understanding.
  • You will develop ways of dealing with conflict situations professionally without going beyond your own boundaries

Methods: Trainer input, exercises, role plays

Speaker: Dr. Ursula Bertels, Ethnologie in Schule und Erwachsenenbildung (ESE)
