Brain lipid metabolism

The figure shows a fruit fly larva with ppk::CD4GFP labeled c4da neurons (top). The bottom part shows tracings of c4da neuronal dendrites of a wildtype neuron (left) and neurons in which toxic lipids accumulate with increasing concentration.

Lipid metabolism
Drosophila

The brain is our most lipid enriched organ. However, especially neurons are very vulnerable to alterations in lipid metabolism. We study how a failure in lipid metabolic pathways is affecting neuronal development and maintenance and focus mainly on human disease related alleles which we bring into Drosophila to study how they affect specific subsets of neurons. In the lab we use molecular biology, genetics, histology, in vivo imaging, and behavioral analysis.
