"Constitutional Courts and Countermajoritarian Protection" was the topic of the 2nd webinar between WWU and STF
In the second virtual seminar between the University of Münster (WWU) and the Brazilian Supreme Court (STF), held on 11 March 2022, the role of constitutional courts and countermajoritarian protection was discussed. Professors from the WWU Faculty of Law, Prof. Dr. James Fowkes and Prof. Dr. Joachim Englisch, together with Prof. Dr. Patrícia Perrone Campos Mello (UniCEUB) and Prof. Dr. Oscar Vilhena (FGV Direito SP) were invited to the discussion.
The keynote lecture held by Justice Luís Roberto Barroso proved to be particularly insightful, addressing constitutional democracy, the roles and missions of the courts and, finally, the actions of courts in some parts of the world to protect democracy from extremist authoritarian populism. Thus, he not only provided significant contributions to the discussion of the subsequent panels, but also to the general understanding of the topic.
As the discussion dealt with a highly topical and relevant issue given the rise of authoritarian and populist extremism around the world, the debate was of great interest not only to jurists, , but also to the general public. The videos in English and Portuguese on the STF's official YouTube channel have registered a total of over 1,600 views to date.
The partnership between WWU Faculty of Law and the STF was initiated in 2021 through a cooperation agreement.
