INTERDISCIPLINARS LECTURE SERIES 2022: "I would prefer not to." Bartleby oder Praktiken der Verweigerung im sozial- und kulturwissenschaftlichen Diskurs
The starting point of the lecture series is Herman Melville's short story "Bartleby, the Scrivener: A Story of Wall Street" (1853), in which the main character persistently resists the demands made on him with the words "I would prefer not to" and refuses to act and cooperate. The motifs of non-action and passivity, strategies of refusal and social struggle, and the problematizations of resistance and civil disobedience that were put up for debate with the literary model have been taken up by social movements in recent years. They became the focus of a critical theoretical reflection as well as a discourse in social and cultural studies about the (im)possibilities of political and social resistance. We would like to take up this discourse in the lecture series and deepen it in an interdisciplinary exchange. The aim is to problematize the potentials of resistant action for the changeability of power relations. Refusal is not only a retreat into the private sphere, but empowerment, making exclusion visible and expanding the political, e.g. through moments of passivity - also with a focus on relations of dependency and interdependence.
The lecture series will take place under the direction of Professor Gabriele Wilde and in attendance on Thursdays from 12 to 2 p.m. (c.t.). A detailed description of the lecture series as well as more information on the lecturers can be found in the lecture series flyer.
