At the world's largest inclusive sports event, the Special Olympics World Games, several thousand athletes with intellectual and multiple disabilities compete with and against each other in 26 sports. This year, the Special Olympics World Games will take place from June 17 to 25, 2023, in Berlin and thus for the first time in Germany. As part of the "Special Olympics" project seminar, the Sports Institute is participating in the Host Town project in Münster this year. A subsequent visit to the Special Olympics World Games is also part of it.
The "Host Town Program" is a unique project that welcomes international athletes to Germany. This takes place in preparation for the Olympic World Games from 12. until 15.06.2023. The Special Olympics delegation from the Netherlands will be welcomed and hosted here in Münster. The international guests can look forward to a four-day program designed to promote greater participation in our society.
The Host Town program thus offers a foretaste of the fifth State Games of Special Olympics NRW for people with intellectual and multiple disabilities, which will be held in Münster next year from May 22 to 25, 2024.
