Successful binational science exchange in Tokyo

The 11th German-Japanese Symposium of Sports Science took place from March 1 to 3, 2023, at the Nippon Sports Science University (NSSU) in Tokyo under the guiding theme "Rethinking sustainability issues and values in sports". Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Roland Naul summarized, in one of three keynote lectures, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the physical activity and health of children and adolescents.
In line with the keynote theme, the 16 individual contributions provided a variety of sports science perspectives on current issues, sustainability goals, and values of sport in Germany and Japan, which can be located in the areas of anti-doping strategies, e-sports, gender diversity, and identification and motivation processes in sport, among others. In addition to Prof. Dr. Bernd Strauß and  Prof. Dr. Maike Tietjens, Frederik Borkenhagen (University of Heidelberg), Prof. Dr. Annette Hofmann (PH Ludwigsburg), Prof. Dr. Franziska Lautenbach (Humboldt University Berlin), Dr. Martin Meyer (University of Vechta) and Dr. Aiko Möhwald (University of Paderborn) presented their current research findings, projects and reflections.
A significant program item was also the exchange in the form of a discussion forum between the dvs and the JSPEHSS on the further future cooperation of both organizations. The importance of a regular and sustainable professional meeting was also emphasized by Prof. Naul, who was honored during the symposium by Prof. Okade (conference chair) for his many years of commitment to the relationship work between the sports sciences of both countries.
In conclusion, the symposium showed once again how diverse sports science and its research are and how fruitful an international and -disciplinary exchange is for learning from each other and broadening one's own perspectives. The 12th German-Japanese Symposium of Sports Science is expected to be hosted by the PH Ludwigsburg in two years.
