Romance Linguistics

(French/Italian/Spanish Linguistics)

Objective

Specializing allows students to focus their studies on one of the linguistic disciplines. Romance Linguistics with a focus on French Linguistics is one of the specialization options. The module builds on the knowledge acquired in the compulsory modules and is complemented by elective courses and the practice module. The master's thesis is written in the subject area of the specialization module.

Course content

In this module, various linguistic issues with a high theoretical standard are explored from different, possibly controversial perspectives. This intensive examination of current research-relevant topics, coupled with independent theory and methodology developed from previous linguistic courses, may subsequently encourage the formulation of a research question for the master's thesis.

In the master's seminars and in the practical, subject-specific scientific discussion takes place in the foreign language. The lecture is usually held in German. The module final examination comprises the components 3., 4., and 5. It takes place partly in the foreign language.

Learning outcomes

The students will be able to independently deal with linguistic issues in a way that could potentially be included in a master's thesis. Students will be able to evaluate different research results in relation to the object under consideration as well as concerning the explanations of the phenomenon. They will have gained a high degree of confidence in dealing with research literature. They will be able to independently analyze authentic text documents and corpora with regard to selected linguistic phenomena. Their knowledge of theory and methodology will have been perfected thanks to the development of the current state of research.
