The MS Wissenschaft on tour through Germany and Austria
The Käte Hamburger Kolleg is participating in this year's exhibition on the "MS Wissenschaft" with a self-developed exhibit. The exhibition ship of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) drops anchor in around 30 cities in Germany and Austria. On board, everything revolves around freedom, the theme of the Year of Science 2024.

Freiheit im Wandel - the quiz
Visitors can test their knowledge of the history of freedom in the interactive quiz "Freiheit im Wandel" (freedom in transition) developed by the directors, science communication and research associates of the Kolleg. The questions focus on German history from the Middle Ages to the recent past and address very different aspects of freedom, for example, the demand for the abolition of serfdom in the Peasants' War of 1525, the famous 19th century protest song "Die Gedanken sind frei" ("Thoughts are free") and legal advances in women's self-determination since the 1950s. It shows that what freedom means and who benefits from it has changed again and again over the course of history.
Events on deck
From 18 to 22 July, the MS Wissenschaft will be docking in Münster's city harbour at the Kunsthalle. Admission to the exhibition and the events on deck is free. Registration is not required.

Meet the Scientist: Exhibit 7 - „Freiheit im Wandel“
Benjamin Seebröker and Lennart Pieper provide insights into research at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg "Legal Unity and Pluralism" at the University of Münster. At this centre, fellows from all over the world examine the law in various societies from antiquity to the present day. Freedom plays an important role in this research, as it has often been defined in legal terms throughout history. This gave rise to the idea for the historical quiz "Freiheit im Wandel" (freedom in transition), which the two of them and their colleagues have designed for MS Wissenschaft. They will be happy to answer your questions.

Dialog an Deck: „Stadtluft macht frei“ – Freiheitskonzepte im mittelalterlichen und frühneuzeitlichen Münster
„Stadtluft macht frei“ lautet ein bekanntes Rechtssprichwort – aber was genau bedeutet es eigentlich? Es setzt voraus, dass anders als heute nicht alle frei waren, sondern es Unfreie oder Halbfreie gab. Welche Freiheit konnte die Stadt des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit bieten und wer kam in ihren Genuss? Ulrike Ludwig und Peter Worm begeben sich gemeinsam mit dem Publikum auf eine spannende Spurensuche durch Münster. In der Vormoderne kommt Freiheit oft auch im Plural vor: Bestimmte Personen oder gesellschaftliche Gruppen hatte „Freiheiten“ inne, die sie zum Beispiel von der Steuerpflicht befreiten. Es gab auch zeitlich begrenzte Freiheiten wie die Marktfreiheit während des Sends, die bis heute durch das berühmte Sendschwert am Rathaus angezeigt wird. Schließlich begegnen uns Freiheiten in der Stadt als besondere Rechtsräume, etwa als Dom- oder Stiftsfreiheit. Die Straße Sankt-Mauritz-Freiheit erinnert bis heute daran.
