The following list of courses reflects the breadth of Digital Humanities within the departments of the University of Münster involved in the certificate. Usually, the courses are held in German. For some courses, subject-specific knowledge is required, too, please inform yourself individually. We recommend contacting the respective lecturers, as there may also be limited numbers of participants. If you know of other courses at the University of Münster in which aspects of Digital Humanities are applied or taught and which are open to certificate students, please let us know.

Digital manuscript cultures
Date: 27-31 March 2023

Topic: Researching manuscripts digitally offers numerous advantages, but also harbours a number of methodological challenges. From the handwritten manuscript in the archive to a digitally transcribed, networked, searchable, semantically enriched and visualised text, there are several steps to be taken, which we want to try out as examples in the SCDH training course "Digital Manuscript Cultures". We will introduce digital tools and methods and learn about professional and semi-professional (but still technically high-quality) scanning of texts in small groups. We will then learn about the possibilities of Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR) for the automated recognition of handwriting so that it becomes machine-readable. To this end, we will use existing handwriting models and transcribe sample manuscripts ourselves in order to understand the principle of model training for handwriting. Finally, we will semantically enrich the machine-readable texts with the help of automatic and manual methods, provide them with additional structured metadata and finally visualise them using examples.

Participation: The course will take place on four afternoons (27/28 and 30/31 March 2023 from 2-6 p.m.) as part of the Spring School "Interdisciplinary Manuscript Cultures". In addition to the participants of the Spring School, it is open to all humanities researchers at the University of Münster and students of the DH certificate. The number of participants is limited to 20. It is planned to hold the course in person. Please register at scdh@uni-muenster.de. When registering, please indicate whether you would like to participate as part of the DH certificate programme, as an employee of the University of Münster or as a participant of the Spring School. If your registration is confirmed but you are unable to attend, please be sure to cancel your registration so that people from the waiting list can move up.
Credit points: In addition to participation, the collaborative writing of an article about the workshop for the DH blog [DE] is required to obtain two credit points for the certificate.
