A visit by representatives of the Casa de Oswaldo Cruz, the institute of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) dedicated to the remembrance and study of the history of medicine in Brazil, served as the impetus for organizing a seminar that took place on 6 December in Rio de Janeiro. The German Day at Fiocruz welcomed representatives from German universities and funding organizations to the headquarters in Manguinhos for a morning of information and discussions. The hybrid event was open to the entire Fiocruz community, which consists of 11 institutes spread across Brazil and covers various fields of knowledge, ranging from life sciences to social sciences.

At the opening table, the German Consul General in Rio de Janeiro, Jan Freigang, mentioned the recent visit of Germany's Health Minister, Prof. Karl Lauterbach, to Brazil as part of the G20 summit. The Minister visited the Fiocruz headquarters in the state of Amazonas and emphasized the importance of the connection between climate change and public health—issues of great interest and a foundation for cooperation between the two countries.

The University of Münster was repeatedly mentioned in the speeches of Fiocruz representatives, not only because of the agreement signed between the two institutions in 2023, but especially due to the effective research collaboration that has existed on an individual level for many years and has deepened significantly following the institutionalization of the cooperation. A coincidental confirmation of this was the workshop „University of Münster-Fiocruz Alliance for Infectious Disease Preparedness,“ held in the days leading up to the informational event. With a delegation of six professors and researchers from the University of Münster, the aim of the meeting, which was funded by the BMBF, was to establish contacts in a „matchmaking“ format, in which the research areas of both institutions were presented and potential scientific cooperation opportunities discussed.

In this context, and to underline the interest in the relationship with Fiocruz, the Director of the Brazil Centre in São Paulo, Laura Redondo, introduced the University of Münster to the audience and highlighted the funding programmes dedicated to internationalisation - whether through the University's own programmes or in partnership with Brazilian funding agencies such as CAPES and FAPESP.
