Animal experimentation in teaching

Animals are used for teaching purposes at various institutes across the departments within Münster University, as part of practical courses and final examination work. The animals concerned are vertebrates such as mice, rats, guinea pigs or fish. In addition, students work with invertebrate species such as decapods or drosophila.

To a very large extent during basic training at the Faculty of Medicine, animal experimentation is not carried out. This means that basic medical studies can be completed without handling any animals. It is only later, during specialization, that animals are used for teaching purposes.

When teaching is being planned and carried out, the same principles apply as in animal experimentation in research: care is always taken to safeguard animal welfare, critically query the number of animals used and restrict them to a minimum, and, on principle, replace the use of animals whenever possible.

Courses on laboratory animals at Münster University

Anyone who plans or carries out animal experimentation, and/or who kills animals for scientific purposes, is – in line with the Directive for the Protection of Animals Used for Experimental and Other Scientific Purposes (TierSchVersV) – obliged to acquire the necessary specialist knowledge and skills for these activities. The requirements regarding the specialist knowledge necessary are defined by the activity in question.

The required specialist knowledge can be acquired by taking part in appropriate specialist courses which teach the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge and skills.

These specialist courses on handling laboratory animals, given at Münster University, cover the following topics:

  • Basic knowledge of the current national and international legal regulations in the field of animal welfare (Animal Welfare Act, Animal Welfare Directive on Laboratory Animals, Directive on Notifications Relating to Laboratory Animals, current EU regulations)
  • Basics regarding the planning of experiments
  • Ethics and 3R
  • Laboratory animals: breeding and husbandry
  • Experimental methods
  • Fundamentals of anaesthetics
  • Basics regarding stress in laboratory animals
  • Killing laboratory animals
  • Species-specific biology, husbandry and special requirements
