Climbing project in cooperation with the university hospital
The cooperation project between the Institute of Sports Science and the Clinic for Pediatric Hematology and Oncology at Münster University Hospital under the direction of Eike Boll is being expanded to include climbing and bouldering. On 18.11.2023, a taster day was held as a pilot project for children and young people and their families at the KletterBar Münster. With the active support of students from the "Sport in Oncology" seminar from Module 10, the children and young people were introduced to the sport of climbing. In addition to the theoretical content in the seminar, the students also received further training in the sport of climbing and successfully completed a course on the basics of top rope climbing. This enabled them to share basic safety techniques with the experienced climbing instructors and accompany all participants on their way to independent climbing.Due to the various physical limitations of the children and young people, the good supervision ratio makes it possible to respond individually to the participants and to support each one without losing group affiliation with other children. Climbing is a particularly suitable sport for children and young people with disabilities. The students gain an insight into the (sports) teaching concept with very heterogeneous target groups. The project follows the concept of family-oriented rehabilitation, so that parents and siblings can also try out new sports. They often no longer trust themselves or their children to do sports such as climbing due to long periods of therapy and hospital stays. However, a multi-professional team on site consisting of doctors, sports therapists, climbing coaches and sports students makes this possible. In the long term, the aim is to enable families and, in particular, sick children and young people to dare to do more again! Kinderkrebshilfe Münster e.V. supports this project financially.
