Health & Aging

Preventive ageing research is a major focus of our research. Here we pursue two research strands in particular:

  • On the one hand, we are investigating the interaction of motor function and cognition and the significance of physical activity for neurocognition. In this context, we are also concerned with the question of how the individualisation of physical activity interventions affects healthy ageing and are conducting studies on prevention in care institutions.
  • Secondly, we are investigating movement control and motor learning in older people; in particular, age-related changes in upper and lower limb movement control and their underlying mechanisms, the importance of sensory feedback for upper limb movement control, and adaptivity and learning. We also aim to evaluate new ways of diagnosing dementia in the early stages of the disease. In this context, another focus of our work is demographic ageing in an occupational context (Bremer Handstudie). The aim is to uncover the mechanisms underlying the decline in hand skills in the course of working life and to investigate the stability, plasticity and learning ability of older employee in particular in this area.
