Discovery of the Higgs boson? - The role of theory
The recent discovery of a Higgs-like particle at the LHC is an enormous reward for the huge experimental efforts behind this experiment. It is also a great success for our theoretical description of matter and interactions. Precise theoretical calculations are the key to relate the observations to the Standard Model Lagrangian and to identify the newly discovered particle as the Higgs boson or possibly something else. In this talk I will recall the most relevant theory predictions for the Higgs searches. I will argue that they were indispensable for the experimental achievements over the last few years.
