R is a programming language for statistical calculations and graphics. The syntax is based on the programming language S, with which R is largely compatible, and the semantics on Scheme. As a standard distribution, R is provided with an interpreter as a command line environment with reduced graphical buttons. Numerous packages available online contain additional functions to analyze data with respect to questions from different disciplines. R distinguishes itself from other known statistical environments in several respects and can no longer be described exclusively as statistical software.
