Emacs is a family of text editors. Emacs offers a number of modes that are useful for creating source code for various programming or markup languages. For example, Emacs can be used as an HTML editor that also performs syntax checking. Syntax highlighting is supported in most of these modes. Emacs an extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time display editor, which is especially characterized by its extensibility.
