Consumer revolution and changes in household consumption in north-western Germany, 16th-19th century
The dissertation examines the extent to which the thesis of an early modern consumer revolution applies to the northwest German interior. The consumer revolution is understood as the reorientation of the needs of early modern households from a primarily subsistence-oriented household economy to an economic behaviour oriented towards market products. It is based on the analysis of peasant estate inventories and supplementary sources such as lists of taxes and duties and personal data from church registers. Different study areas from the Westphalian Münsterland region, which differ in factors such as varying commercial penetration, socio-economic setting and rural/urban character, will be studied comparatively in order to explore the importance of the Netherlands as a neighbouring economic area and the influence of urban consumer culture.
