Disciplinary identity, methods, and objectivity
Target group: doctoral and postdoctoral researchers
Different academic disciplines operate with different methods and different standards of objectivity. This can be a stumbling block in interdisciplinary projects, and it can make public communication about research difficult. In the worst case, the inability to communicate and defend one’s methodological standards can undermine trust in one’s results.
In this workshop we will learn about common (mis-)conceptions about scientific methodology and their pitfalls. We will exploit the interdisciplinary setting and try to articulate what is distinctive about methods in our respective disciplines and where common ground with other disciplines can be found.
The workshop covers:
1. Common ideas about “the” scientific method & their pitfalls
2. Methodological paradigms in different disciplines
3. Communicating with peers & the public about methods and objectivity
Objectives:
-
Understand and articulate what is distinctive about methods and standards of objectivity within one’s own discipline
-
Understand methods and standards of objectivity from other disciplines
-
Help establish common methodological ground with peers from different disciplines to facilitate interdisciplinary projects
-
Avoid common pitfalls when communicating about one’s own research
-
Communicate and defend one’s own methodological decisions
Facilitator: Dr. Stefan Roski (Center for Philosophy of Science (Zentrum für Wissenschaftstheorie))
