Both the University of Münster and most third-party funding agencies require that data generated in the course of research projects are stored securely and long-term. datasafe supports you in meeting this requirement.
Scientific publications, research data, and other digital objects can be irretrievably lost due to changes in technology and other factors. File formats that are common today may not be readable in a few years. The term "long-term availability" encompasses concepts and techniques designed to ensure that files remain usable and interpretable in the long term. With this in mind, research data should be stored unencrypted whenever possible. In addition, open and standardized file formats should be used wherever possible.
To provide effective support, the University of Münster cooperates with the North Rhine-Westphalian Library Service Centre (hbz), which offers e.g. the Rosetta Services for long-term digital availability.
The hbz has also put together an overview of most common file formats, with information about their suitability with regard to long-term availability.
