[Religious Education in the Long 19th Century. Fields of Tension, Places, Media, Professional Profiles]

This volume illuminates processes of change in religious pedagogy in the long 19th century. The epochal social upheavals in the period between the French Revolution (1789) and the end of the First World War (1918) concern all religious education in Europe. Arguments, narratives, and institutions are under intellectual and political scrutiny and are readjusted. The collected case studies bring together these processes on the basis of exemplary condensed (inter-)national tensions, seeking out, for instance, educational places where the changes became particularly noticeable. They show these changes in media such as catechisms, missionary booklets, or school handbooks, and they point to the formation of new professional profiles.

The volume documents the conference of the Arbeitskreis für historische Religionspädagogik (Working Group for Historical Religious Education) in spring 2021, in which historians, teachers and religious educators from Germany, Austria and Switzerland participated.
