My research focuses on photography and the visual representations of disasters. It investigates the role of photographic imagery in shaping public perceptions, responses, and the experiences of communities affected by natural disasters. Disaster photographs serve not merely as documentary records of physical devastation but also construct powerful narratives that shape public perceptions, interpretations, and responses to catastrophic events. They serve as crucial interfaces between local, national, and global scales of experience, influencing how individuals, communities, and institutions perceive, interpret, and respond to disaster occurrences. Analyzing the production, circulation, and reception of disaster photographs offers significant insights into the complex interplay of power, representation, and policymaking in the aftermath of catastrophic events. Drawing upon theories of visual culture, social anthropology, and disaster studies, my research examines how photographic practices and visual representations mediate the sociocultural dimensions of disasters at the community, societal, and global level.
