Diversity and inclusion
Diversity and Inclusion Statement
At the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology we know that studying and working on a campus that reflects and embraces a rich and broad range of human experiences and perspectives is incredibly important. Not only does it enrich the quality and vibrancy of campus life, it also strengthens our capacity to learn and disseminate knowledge and prepares us for engaged citizenship and leadership in an increasingly diverse and global society.
Diversity is crucial to an educational institution’s striving for excellence in learning, research, and service. A population of students, faculty, and staff of different backgrounds and with diverse perspectives, talents, and needs is particularly well placed to achieve these goals. The diversity of viewpoints, backgrounds and experiences will lead to a rich mix of ideas, to energizing and enlightening debates, deeper commitments, and a host of educational, civic and work outcomes. Our teaching and administrative staff is dedicated to advancing the institution’s commitment to diversity and inclusion as a strategic priority.
Diversity is of vital importance to our department’s intellectual mission. Our curricular and research endeavors reflect a range of perspectives and interests; they aim at fostering creative and innovative outcomes and help attract students from diverse backgrounds. As part of these activities, our faculty invites and guides students to engage in rigorous critical analysis of cultural, ethnic, racial, and other differences.
The department, its staff and students sustain an academic, work and social environment that values open communication, respectful interaction, and civility. We have a shared responsibility for the well-being of others.
