Research in the Mootz laboratory - Chemistry and biology of proteins
We are interested in how proteins work on the molecular level and how proteins can be equipped with new designer functions through chemical and genetic engineering. To this end, we combine expertises at the interface of chemistry and biology. We develop novel approaches for the site-specific chemical modification of proteins and for the experimental control of their activity by external stimuli, i.e., by chemical reagents, ligands, enzymatic activity or light. Next to studying purified proteins, our research is also geared towards studying and manipulating proteins in cells and whole organisms. We aim to apply these approaches to new applications in biotechnology and biomedicine.
